Four weeks from today I will jump in my car and head 2 hours north to the Alexander Valley to gather with thirty nine other food-minded peeps for summer camp. Well, “summer camp meets the farmers’ market”, as they so delightfully put it… I am thrilled (and honored) to have been selected for Eat Retreat 2014!
‘Eat Retreat is a weekend workshop dedicated to good food and innovative thinking. Created for leaders in the food community, the objective of this invite-only event is to inspire, rejuvenate and celebrate a shared joy of food. Eat Retreaters are food writers, entrepreneurs, chefs, food system visionaries, community builders, photographers, farmers, and makers of all kind. Attendees are hand-selected for their zeal, creativity, and collaborative skills and spend the weekend sharing meals, exchanging ideas, and relishing new flavors.’
Zeal – check
Creativity – check
Collaborative skills – YOU GOT IT.
Here is a great interview with one of Eat Retreat’s founders, Kathryn Tomajan, explaining how Eat Retreat got started and why it continues to inspire.
As you might imagine, I will spend quite a bit of my time over this sure-to-be-amazing weekend gathering images and stories to bring home and share. Whilst there, I will be running a little workshop on mobile photography and I’ve also signed up to be one of the cocktail crafters. Perhaps I’ll even run a little competition amongst my Eat Retreat peers to help come up with the best name for my best cocktail recipe? I still have some time to think of a good prize …
OH MY GOSH CAN WE GO RIGHT THIS MINUTE?

This morning I got to daydreaming about the time I jetted off to Gulfport, Mississippi to shoot a new facility for Million Air, a private aviation company that has terminals dotted around the country for those who prefer to fly privately.
And now I have a serious urge for brilliant skies, damn fine Southern food, and a quick side trip to New Orleans. Who’s in?
The crab apple tree is Springing at Stone Edge Farm – March 6, 2014.
Two of the most talented and most lovely ladies on the planet – Lisa Solomon and Katrina Rodabaugh – are offering their online craft class INTERWOVEN one final time this Spring. The class covers 4 textile-based projects (soft sculpture cloud mobile, crochet, embroidery, and a mini quilt project) over 8 weeks. It also includes exclusive artist interviews, video tutorials, possibilities for altering the techniques, and more resources than can be listed.
Not only are they wonderful, they are also generous enough to offer any of my visitors/readers a special 10% off code. Just use SPECIALFRIENDS as the code upon checkout. I cannot recommend this class highly enough!! Sign up SOON – the class starts March 31st and runs May 23, 2014.
(note: above images by the gals themselves… I TOLD you they were talented!)
I am VERY pleased to announce that the Stone Edge Farm Cookbook, photographed by Leslie Sophia Lindell Photography, has been awarded the 2014 Cookbook of the Year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP).
The book also garnered the 2014 Best First Book/Julia Child Award, was nominated as a top three Finalist in the Photography category (!!!), and as a Finalist in the Chefs and Restaurants category.
Considered the gold standard among cookbook awards, the IACP Cookbook Awards have been presented for more than 25 years to promote quality and creativity in writing and publishing, and to expand the public’s awareness of culinary literature.
It is a great honor to have photographed the book and to have worked with such a tremendously wonderful team.
To learn more about Stone Edge Farm, their delicious wines, and purchase copies of the cookbook please visit their website at stoneedgefarm.com
I cannot tell you how much I adore these two wonderful humans or how much this work didn’t feel like working at all. Annie and Eric are the dynamic (married) duo behind 3 Fish Studios – go ahead, click on over and see just how dynamic (and talented) they are.
They took advantage of my portrait promo this month (click here for details) and this post serves as a final reminder that you have until this Friday, March 14th at midnight to get in touch and book your shoot at this price at me@lesliesophialindell.com or 415.488.3885. Many thanks to everyone who has signed up so far!
There are many things that I am excited to share with you about the Stone Edge Farm Cookbook over the next several weeks and months but let’s start with the two that are most time sensitive…
This Saturday, March 8th from 3-4 p.m., author and chef John McReynolds will be speaking and signing books at my MOST favorite bookstore, Omnivore Books in San Francisco. This free event will include tasting of Stone Edge Farm wines as well as small plates from the farm and vineyard. A little birdy told me that the book’s photographer will be there, as well. Won’t you join us?
I am also very, very pleased to announce that the Stone Edge Farm Cookbook has been named as a finalist in three categories for the 2014 International Association of Culinary Professionals Cookbook Awards. The three categories are Photography; First Book (The Julia Child Award); and Chefs and Restaurants. No other book was nominated in three or more categories this year. Being a finalist is such a grand reward in itself… the awards ceremony is in Chicago on Saturday, March 15th and I will keep you posted on results!
